What do you think when you hear the word “mindfulness”? A specific activity, like meditation or deep relaxation where the aim is to clear one’s thoughts, may come to mind. This is the state of mindfulness, but did you know that mindfulness is also a stable personality trait?

Trait mindfulness reflects individual differences in general levels of mindfulness across situations and time. People with higher trait mindfulness are typically better at keeping their attention focused on the task at hand, without their mind wandering on to other things such as past and future worries. As a result, people who are higher in trait mindfulness are able to concentrate on complex tasks for longer periods of time.
